Shelly Lowery, born in Independence, Missouri, was a standout in her time on the court at Missouri Western. Lowery, a middle hitter transferred to MWSU from the University of Missouri and had arguably one of the greatest two year stints ever by a volleyball player in MIAA history.
Shelly’s name is all over the Missouri Western record books. She led the Griffs all-time in single season kills with 809, digs with 531 and blocks with 361. For her two year career she led the MWSU in kills with 1,493, digs with 999, and blocks with 561.
In 1995, Lowery set a single season MIAA record for blocks with 361. In 1994 she set a single MIAA record for kill with 809. Both records still stand today. Her 1995 year was a season to remember, as she set NCAA Division II records for triple/doubles with 17 and all-time in blocks with 361.
Lowery was truly a force on the court earning Player of the Week honors 5 times and being selected to four All-Tournament Teams. For her efforts, she was named to the All-MIAA First Team in both 1994 and 1995 and was named the MIAA MVP after both seasons.
Following the 1995 campaign, Shelly was selected as an NCAA Academic All-American in the classroom, as well as, being named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team and NCAA All-America First Team.
In 1998, Lowery participated in the Women’s Professional Volleyball League for the Kansas City Lightning. She led her team to a 7-1 record and league championship.
