Carl Butcher began his career at Missouri Western in 1980 when he became a faculty member in the department of criminal justice. He served as Chairman of the department for fifteen of the twenty years he was a part of the program.
 
He sits on the MWSU Gold Coat Club Board and is a top fund raiser for the athletic department nearly every year. For twenty years, he helped out the university at every home football and basketball game where he ran the clock. He also serves as the assistant chair for the MWSU Celebrity Golf Committee.
 
The St. Joseph News Press considered Butcher as a top citizen in the St. Joseph community, selecting him as one of the “20 that count” in 2008. He is the chairman of the Greater St. Joseph Crime Stoppers, the City of St. Joseph Public Safety Review Committee and the St. Joseph Police Department Addition and Buchanan County Sheriff’s remodeling. He also served as co-chair to the Capital Improvement Plan that passed with flying colors by the citizens of St. Joseph.
 
Butcher continues to involve himself in Griffon athletics, residing in St. Joseph, Mo.
