Greg Kastner was born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1970, former Missouri Western Head Baseball Coach Doug Minnis signed this high school standout from Christian Brothers High School to pitch for the “Golden Griffons”.
Greg competed for the Griffons from 1971-73 compiling an 18-6 record and a 2.20 ERA. Recruited as a power pitcher, Greg led the team with 109 strikeouts in 69 innings and posted an impressive 1.43 ERA. He currently holds the Griffon single season records for fewest hits and fewest runs allowed in a season racking up a Griffon record 46 2/3 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. Greg appears 2nd on the Missouri Western career list for strikeouts with 238 and 5th on the career list for complete games with 15. His 109 strikeouts ranks him 2nd on the single season record list. In 1973, Greg was named to the NAIA All-District 1st team, NAIA All-Area 1st team, and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.
After the 1973 season Greg signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Braves organization. He returned to Western in 1976 to complete his education, and graduated in 1977 with a B.S. in Education. Currently, Greg is the Assistant Principal,Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Bishop LeBlond High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. He also serves as a member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association Baseball Advisory Board.
Greg and his wife Mindy, have two daughters. Adrienne, a member of the Mystic Dance team at Missouri Western, and Andria, a 2-time All-American cheerleader at Bishop LeBlond High School.
