EDMOND, Okla. - The Missouri Western women's tennis team competed this past weekend in the ITA Division II Women's Central Region Championships on the University of Central Oklahoma campus in Edmond.
Maeva Roguet, one of four new freshmen on the roster this year, made it all the way to semifinals in the consolation bracket in Flight A singles. Her semifinal match, however, wasn't played, as all matches slated for Sunday were rained out.
"It went pretty good," head coach Alejandro de la Torre said. "The new players did better than expected. They lost to players who made it the semifinals or the finals. For their first tournament of the season, I feel like it went pretty well."
Cristina Granero Boj, ranked No. 4 in the Central Region, had a strong showing in Flight A singles, getting to the round of 16 in the main bracket, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Southern Arkansas' Amelie Gindl in that round. Gindl went on to win the championship in Flight A singles.
Johanna Priedite won each of her first three matches in somewhat dominant fashion in Flight A singles (6-1, 6-2), (6-3, 6-1), (6-3, 6-2) before falling in quarterfinals to Nebraska-Kearney's Narinda Ranaivo 6-2, 6-1.
In Flight B singles,
Celia Castaño Malnero made it to the round of 16 before falling in three sets to Augustana's Martina Sofia Sfilio (6-0, 6-1, 10-5).
Missouri Western is next in action this fall on October 6 when they welcome Truman State to St. Joseph. That match will start at 1 p.m. and be played at the Noyes Tennis Court.
