ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Tennis (12-2, 3-0 MIAA) continued its strong conference start with a 6-1 win over Northeastern State Friday morning at Genesis Health Club.
The match opened with a marquee showdown at No. 1 doubles, as No. 44-ranked
Jevrosima Mitic and
Alejandra Ramirez Botella took on the nation's No. 28 Division II duo of Daisy Barrow and Renata Morales. The Griffon pair battled in a tightly contested matchup between ranked teams but ultimately fell 5-7.
The Griffons secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Cristina Granero Boj and
Johanna Priedite dominated 6-0 at No. 2, while
Mila Larrieu and
Claudia Pastor followed with a 6-2 victory to give MWSU the early 1-0 lead.
In singles, MWSU won five of six matches.
Johanna Priedite rallied at No. 1 for a 6-7(1-7), 6-2, 6-1 comeback win.
Jevrosima Mitic fell at No. 2 in straight sets.
Cristina Granero Boj earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3, and Alejandra Ramirez clinched the team victory at No. 4 with a three-set win, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Claudia Pastor added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5, and
Ella Gates closed out the match at No. 6 with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory.
