Box Score ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon Tennis was in top form once again, maintaining their winning ways while taking down Cowley College in their duel match on Sunday at Genesis Health Club.
The Griffons (4-1) shined in singles play, playing well in tough matches that hung in the balance for the majority of the event. Cowley (2-3) hung with the Griffons for the majority of the day, but the Griffons won a number of close matches to pull away for the 6-1 win.
DOUBLES
The Griffons dropped the No. 1 doubles match, as
Izzi MacGibbon and
Cristina Granero Boj fell to Isid Hernandez and Alexandra Melnikova, 6-4.
Anya Chavez and
Anais Peralta Criado won the No. 2 doubles match over Ntokozo Zungu and Arina Babenko, 6-4, and
Nicole Donnelly and
Ariella Curci took down Camila Neyra and Maria Koroleva in the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3.
SINGLES
MacGibbon fell in the No. 1 singles match in three sets, dropping the match to Melnikova, 4-6, 6-0, 5-7. Chavez claimed the No. 2 match in three sets, taking down Babenko, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Boj beat Hernandez in the No. 3 match, winning by scores of 7-6, 6-2. Peralta beat Zungu in the No. 4 match, 7-5, 6-5, with Zungu retiring in the second set due to the Griffons winning the overall competition. Donnelly won in the same way in the No. 5 singles, as she was entering into a third set after being tied at one set apiece, 6-4, 5-7. Casas Blas rounded off the day for the Griffs, winning the No. 6 match, 6-3, 6-2.
NOTABLES
- The Griffons are now 4-0 against non-Division I opponents, with the only loss of the season coming against Division I St. Louis.
- This is the first time this season the Griffons have had three singles matches go to three sets.
- Missouri Western improved on its result against Cowley from last season, where they won 4-3.
