Track and Field opens outdoor season with split-squad meets at ESU and WashU

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Men's and Women's Track and Field opens the outdoor season with a split squad, competing at the ESU Spring Open on Friday, March 27, while distance runners travel to the WashU Distance Carnival Day Two in St. Louis, Missouri.

At Emporia State, events begin at 11 a.m. inside Francis G. Welch Stadium, where MoWest will feature a full lineup across sprints, distance, relays, jumps, and throws.

On the men's side, Angelo Baez-Mahr will compete in the 1,500 meters and run on the 4x400 relay. Aidan Jumper and Dylan Stout are also entered in the 800 meters and will contribute to the relay.

The Griffons bring depth in the 5,000 meters with Adam Ducey, Levi Huber, Ryan Ringgenberg, and Henry Trumpp all set to compete.

In the field events, Dawson Miller headlines the throws group in the javelin, discus, and hammer. He is joined in the javelin by Jackson Sigrist and Tate Youtsey.

For the women, Yesenia Carrillo leads the sprint group, competing in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and 4x400 relay. Brianna DeBord and Bailey Cutler will also factor into the 400 and relay, while Meagan Smith is entered in the 800 and relay.

Distance runners Hailey McKinney and Jade Wickwire will represent MoWest in the 5,000 meters.

In the field events, Kelsi Fair will compete in the shot put and hammer throw, while Abbey Henry is set for the triple jump and long jump. The javelin group includes Maddie McMillan, Abby Molloy, and Taylor Wood.

Meanwhile, a group of Griffon distance runners will compete Friday at the WashU Distance Carnival Day Two, held at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.

Pau Valderrama, Usman Tufa, Kayden Crigger, Logan Soedt, and Sam Shipp are all scheduled for the 5,000 meters, while Mason Orscheln will compete in the 10,000 meters.

Interim head coach Sean Gosewisch shared his thoughts heading into the outdoor season
"We're excited to get the outdoor season underway. Most of the squad will start at ESU, who will host outdoor nationals. It's good to get a feel for their facilities with the intention of sending athletes back in May. A small squad will head to WashU for a chance to throw down qualifying times out the gates at a super competitive distance meet. It should be a Good Friday of competition."
