Makenzie Garr headlines day one of Washburn Open with Shot Put victory

TOPEKA, Kan. – Griffon Track & Field opened up day one at the Washburn Open on Friday at the Sneed Indoor Athletic Facility.

The highlight of day one was Makenzie Garr, who delivered the top performance for the Griffons. Garr claimed first place in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.95 meters (49-00.75).

On the track, Meagan Smith turned in a solid effort in the women's 600 yards, finishing in 1:29.58, while Brianna DeBord followed in 1:42.19. The men's 5,000 meters saw Mason Orschlein pace the Griffons with a time of 15:21.37, followed by Kayden Crigger (15:34.37) and Sam Shipp (15:59.56).

In the women's 5,000 meters, Abby Kinney posted a time of 18:03.92. Field events also featured Abbey Henry in the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.54 meters (34-07.00), while Dawson Miller recorded a throw of 16.62 meters (54-06.50) in the men's weight throw. Kelsi Fair also posted a strong showing in the shot put, recording a mark of 12.23 meters (40-01.50).

Interim head coach Sean Gosewisch shared his thoughts following day one of the meet, saying, "Some athletes stepped up to the level of competition and performed well. Though not her lifetime best, it's always good to get an event win, something Makenzie is no stranger to. I think Meagan Smith, Mason Orschlein, and Abby Kinney capitalized on the opportunity as well, running great for themselves. I hope to see us return tomorrow and continue performing well."
