Trio sends Griffons to MIAA top five finish

BOLIVAR, MO. – Following up a second round 302 with a 303 Wednesday, April 24, Missouri Western State University locked up one of the MIAA's best five team marks at the 2024 championships.

"I was really proud of the way we finished," head coach Matt Thrasher pointed out. "We put ourselves behind the eight ball with a bad start. However, the last two days, we were actually tied for second among the final two round scores."

"We fought hard and came back," he added. "We thought there was even a chance for third towards the end."

Thrasher's Griffons proved steady again over the final 18 at Silo Ridge just as they did Tuesday, April 23. All five scoring players were in the sub-80s range, taking advantage of a beautiful late April afternoon and early evening. Sophomore Ines Vandaele (Puilboreau, France) topped the individual finishes, going 75 for a 54-hole 229 to tie for 10th. Senior Julie Hofmanova (Hyskov, Czech Republic) closed out a 230 with a 77 to tie for 12th, and sophomore Alyssa McMillen (Garden City, Kan.) carded a 75 to wind up at 231 which was good for a tie for 14th.

"To have three in top 15 is very nice," Thrasher said. "(Sophomore) Saya (Schweitzer of Anglet, France) wasn't far behind that, either, as she finished 22nd."

"There's a lot to be positive about in the future," he added. "With losing just one starter and the fact that everyone else will be working hard to improve during the off-season, there's good reason for excitement."

MWSU's team 924 was less than seven strokes from the league's top three. The University of Central Missouri turned in a wire-to-wire job, concluding at 907, with Rogers State University of Oklahoma nine shots back in second. The University of Nebraska-Kearney's Juliana Botero Molina was individual medalist (223).
