Griffons Tripped Up In Overtime At Northeastern State

Box Score TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Despite controlling the better part of the match through the 90 minutes of regulation, Missouri Western (7-4-2, 4-2-0 MIAA) fell victim to a stroke of bad luck in overtime at Northeastern State on Friday night, dropping a 1-0 result at Northeastern State (5-5-3, 2-3-1 MIAA).
The Griffons nearly got the scoring off to an early start, as Kaili Campbell found herself open on the left side of midfield in the first minute, but her shot was handled by Brennan Hockett.
Northeastern State tested Anna Mayer four times in the first half, but the Griffon netminder was well up to the challenge and the teams went into the half tied 0-0.
Missouri Western came out on the front foot to start the second half, forcing four stops by the Riverhawks in the opening 15 minutes. Tina Palmieri's shot from the top of the 18 was blocked in the 51st minute, and Hockett was able to stop solid efforts from Eszter Toth in the 55th and Lauren Street in the 57th. Kaili Campbell uncorked a shot from left of center in the 58th, but it was also turned away by a NSU defender.
Campbell forced another pair of saves by Hockett in the 72nd and 75th minute of the match, with her 75th-minute effort curling low through traffic and offering a bit of trouble for Hockett.
Campbell had the best chance of the night for Missouri Western in the 89th minute, as she collected a cross on the left wing from Palmieri, turned and shot it low toward the back post. Hockett was able to dive and smother the save before Carly Zabloudil could pounce on it.
But after dominating the second half, Missouri Western was tripped up by a turnover deep in its own third in the second minute of overtime, as the Riverhawks collected the ball and quickly swung it from the right wing to the top of the 18 on the left side, where Hanna Stettler knocked it past a diving Mayer.
Missouri Western closes out its four-game road swing on Sunday afternoon, taking on Rogers State at 2 p.m.
