Interim Tag Removed! Gosewisch Promoted to Head Coach

Assistant Coach Sean Gosewich was named interim head coach for XC / T&F Coach in August of 2025

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. "Interim" no more.

MoWest Director of Athletics Andy Carter has announced the promotion of Sean Gosewisch to permanent head coach of the Griffon Cross Country and Track and Field programs, effective immediately.

The official announcement was made to a crowd of nearly 500 MWSU student-athletes, administrators and supporters during the 26th Annual Golden Griffon Awards ceremony on May 4th. Gosewisch, who entered the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach, was promoted to the interim head coach in August of '25 after the departure of Cody Ingold. Coming off a whirlwind summer which saw the track and field program suspended in June and then reinstated 10 days later, Gosewisch stepped into the interim head coaching role and was a guiding force of stability.

"During a summer of adversity, Sean has done a tremendous job leading the program this past season" Carter said. "He has been a calming force for both programs and his permanent elevation to head coach was an easy decision. We are extremely proud of him and we are excited to elevate Sean as the fourth head coach in our program's history."

Under Gosewisch's leadership, the Griffon cross country program produced two top 10 finishers in the MIAA Championships (Wimach Gilo and Pau Valderamma) with Gilo becoming the program's first-ever NCAA Championship qualifier. The Indoor Track and Field season saw junior Makenzie Garr finish 2nd at the MIAA Championships in shot put, before finishing sixth in indoor nationals, earning NCAA Division II All-American status along the way.

"I appreciate the administration for giving me this opportunity and putting their trust in my abilities," Gosewisch said. "I want to thank our great group of student-athletes for giving me their best and I look forward to training with the next generation of Griffons and seeing all MoWest teams succeed next year."

Gosewisch, who joined the MWSU staff in July of 2024, brings over a decade's worth of coaching experience, serving as a head coach, assistant coach and graduate assistant. He holds a USATF Level 1 Certification and USTFCCCA Level 3 Endurance Specialist Certification.

His most recent position was at NCAA Division II Tusculum University in Greenville, Tennessee, where he worked for two years with the Pioneers as an assistant coach for two years. Before that, Gosewisch was the head cross country and assistant track and field coach at NAIA William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, from 2011 to 2021.

The Lockport, Illinois native obtained a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in French from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in 2010 and later earned a master's in business leadership from William Penn University in 2013.
