Griffon Soccer heads south to Oklahoma

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western's Pink Weekend was a success for the women's soccer team, as the Griffons went 1-0-1 with a draw against the Central Oklahoma Bronchos and a win against the Newman University Jets.  

Now, the team will travel away this weekend to Oklahoma to face the Rogers State Hillcats and the Northeastern State RiverHawks.

NOTABLES

  • Senior goalkeeper Keeley Kroonenberg recorded her first-ever assist on Sunday against Newman on freshman midfielder Kendall Knisley's goal.
  • Sophomore forward Camrin Peaslee made her first career start on Sunday against Newman and shot four times with two on goal.
  • Kroonenberg had six saves on the weekend.

10/20 - SCOUTING ROGERS STATE | 7 PM
The first stop on the road for the Griffons will be in Claremore, Oklahoma, to take on the Rogers State Hillcats (6-6-2, 3-4 MIAA). In the Hillcats' latest matchup, they lost 1-0 against the Fort Hays State Tigers (10-1-3, 6-0-1 MIAA). The Hillcats are 2-2-1 at home and are in seventh place, trailing MWSU by one spot. Both teams have nine conference points.

Who to Watch
Overall, there are eight different Hillcat goalscorers. Leading the pack is junior forward Alix Tirado, who has five goals and two assists this season. The Hillcats' goalkeeping is the best in the MIAA. Led by junior Tiffany Brittan from Beeston, England, the Hillcats have accumulated an MIAA-best 79 saves. Brittan has an 81% save percentage and has contributed to four shutouts for the team.

Head Coach
The Hillcats are led by second-year man Chris Jones. Jones has coached at the Division I level and also in the MIAA at Fort Hays State as a graduate assistant and at Washburn as a head coach prior to becoming the sixth coach at Rogers State. Jones is 11-13-8 with RSU and 25-31-14 overall in Division II. He is 0-1 vs. MWSU.

Rivalry Record Rabbit Hole
Although the teams have only faced off thrice, the Griffons are 2-1. Missouri Western is 1-0 in Claremore, winning 2-0 on Oct. 17, 2021.

Last Time Out
In their last outing against each other, the Griffons were victorious with a 1-0 win on Oct. 14 last year. In that game, then-junior forward Jaden Skinner assisted then-senior Kali Campbell in the 80th minute, sealing the victory. 

The game will begin on Friday at 7 p.m. at Soldier Field.

10/22 - NORTHEASTERN STATE | 1 PM
After their game on Friday, the team will travel an hour north to play the Northeastern State RiverHawks (4-6-4, 2-4-1 MIAA) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Northeastern is in ninth place in the conference with seven MIAA points. The 'hawks are 2-2-3 at home and just beat Nebraska Kearney 4-0 at DeLoache Field.

Who to Watch
The RiverHawks' leading goalscorer is sophomore forward Sydney Taylor. She had a season-high three goals in their 4-0 victory against the Newman Jets, earning MIAA Offensive Athlete of The Week for her play that weekend. The RiverHawks' defense is led by sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Partykam, who has 52 saves on the season with an 84% save percentage.

Head Coach
Head coach Chase Wooten is in his 13th season at Northeastern State. Wooten is 139-72-33 in his time as the coach of the RiverHawks, with 42 All-MIAA Selections in his career. In his 19 seasons coaching overall, he is 182-132-40.

Rivalry Record Rabbit Hole
Northeastern State has gotten the better of the Griffon, as the Griffons are 3-7-1 in this series. The Griffons have not beaten the RiverHawks since Oct. 18, 2018. 

Last Time Out
In their last game, the teams settled for a 1-1 draw. Then-senior Kali Campbell had the Griffons' solo goal with an assist by then-sophomore defender Lauren Nylund.

The Griffons and RiverHawks will face off at 1 p.m. on DeLoache Field in Tahlequah.

Four years ago on this date, the 2019 Griffons fell 2-1 to none other than Rogers State. In their first-ever game against each other, the Griffons managed 21 shots, but only one was successful. The Hillcats scored the game-winner in extra time in the 98th minute.

The 2021 Griffons faced the Newman Jets at Spratt Stadium on this day. The Griffons won 2-1, with their goals coming from then-senior Eszter Toth in the 22nd minute and then-sophomore Lauren Street in the 57th minute.
