Griffon Women’s Basketball Hosts Two Quality Opponents

Griffons to play Washburn and Emporia State at home

THIS WEEK IN GRIFFON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Wednesday, Jan. 9, 5:30 p.m. vs. Washburn (8-4, 3-0 MIAA)
Saturday, Jan. 12, 2:00 p.m. vs. #23 Emporia State (10-3, 1-2 MIAA)

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western (7-6, 2-2 MIAA) is set to face two tough opponents at the MWSU Fieldhouse this week. The Griffons will play the first of three straight home games when they take on Washburn on Jan. 9.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Washburn enters Wednesday's game playing its best basketball of the season. The Ichabods have won six straight games by an average margin of 18 points per game.
  • Part of the Griffons' recent success has come from limiting their turnovers. The Griffons have won the turnover battle against their opponents in each of their last six games.
  • Jessica Davies should continue to take on most of the load in the frontcourt with some Griffons still injured. Davies has scored in double-figures in five of her six starts, averaging 11.5 points per game during that stretch.
  • The Griffons will face two very different offenses this week. Emporia State leads the MIAA with over nine-made three pointers per game, while Washburn attempts the least amount of three's in the conference.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS
  • Katrina Roenfeldt leads the team and is sixth in the MIAA with 15.3 points per game.
  • Brittany Atkins is averaging 11.5 points per game in her four games played since returning.
  • The Griffons are holding opponents to 62 points per game.
  • Missouri Western has won four of its last five games.

WASHBURN
  • The Ichabods are one of the best rebounding teams in the MIAA with 41 rebounds per game.
  • Hunter Bentley is the Ichabods' leading scorer at over 11 points per game on 51 percent shooting.
  • Washburn is limiting its opponents to just 35 percent shooting.
  • Ron McHenry is coaching in his 19th season at Washburn. McHenry has won over 400 games and is a four-time MIAA Coach of the Year.

EMPORIA STATE
  • Tyra Jones leads the team with 15 points and seven rebounds per game.
  • The Hornets usually get out to a fast start, outscoring opponents by an average of 11 points before halftime.
  • Jessica Wayne is the team's second-leading scorer at 14 points per game and leads the MIAA with over three steals per game.
  • The Hornets have not lost back-to-back games all season long.
