Women's basketball falls in tight semifinal battle against Washburn

Griffons end 2025-26 with momentum and optimism for the future.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Griffon Women's Basketball (15-16, 9-10 MIAA) saw its season come to a close on Saturday in MIAA tournament semifinals, falling to No. 3 seed Washburn, 67-63, on Saturday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

MoWest got off to a solid start, particularly defensively, leading 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. That momentum carried over, and the Griffons enjoyed a 33-25 halftime advantage.

Both teams traded blows in the third quarter, but still MoWest, who never trailed through the first three quarters, led 53-45 entering the fourth.

The fourth quarter was Washburn's time to shine, as the Ichabods took their first lead at 58-57 with 4:25 remaining. The Ichabods (23-7, 14-5 MIAA) never trailed from that point, hitting three of their last four free throw attempts in the final 16 seconds to put it away.

Mia Morel, who scored 90 total points in the MIAA tournament, ended her season and career with a game-high 21 points. Nakiya Harris dropped her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ana Oliveira Dias ended up with 10 points, four assists, three steals and and three rebounds.

Washburn scored 21 points off of 18 MoWest turnovers, but the Griffs held the Bods to just 38.3% shooting (23-of-60).

MoWest, after starting the season 6-14, won nine of its last 11 games, giving first-year head coach Luke Scheidecker palpable momentum heading into the offseason. The Griffs do bid farewell to six seniors - Lindsey Kelderman, Tamesha Dozier, Mia Morel, Sydney Lewis, Meredith Rieker and Ambranette Storr.
