Cantu earns NCBWA Central Region Player of the Week honors

DALLAS, Texas – Griffon Baseball senior infielder Miguel Cantu earned another weekly honor following his standout performances for MoWest.

After being named MIAA Hitter of the Week, Cantu has also been selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Central Region Player of the Week.

Cantu joins Cole Evans as the only Griffons to earn NCBWA recognition this season. Evans was previously named MIAA Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Week earlier this year as well as NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week.

Cantu powered MoWest during a four-game winning streak with a dominant showing at the plate. Over four games, he went 9-for-17 (.529) with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI, adding two doubles and three home runs. He also posted a .619 on-base percentage and a 1.176 slugging percentage, leading the Griffons' offensive surge. As a team, MoWest outscored opponents 63-12, highlighted by a 16-6 win over Northwest Missouri State and a three-game sweep of Newman (15-1, 12-2, 20-3).

Cantu opened the week with a 3-for-6 performance, scoring two runs and driving in six, including a grand slam in the win at Northwest Missouri State. He followed with another standout effort on Friday against Newman, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and six RBI, adding a double and two home runs in the 15-1 victory. On Saturday, he reached base three times via walks and scored twice in a 12-2 win. He closed the week on Sunday by going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, adding a double to cap the 20-3 series-clinching victory over Newman.
