KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) announced its Athletes of the Week for the ninth week of the 2026 baseball season, with Griffon Baseball senior infielder
Miguel Cantu earning MIAA Hitter of the Week honors. He becomes the first Griffon to receive the award this season.
Cantu powered MoWest to a perfect 4-0 week with a dominant offensive showing. Over four games, he went 9-for-17 (.529) with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI, adding two doubles and three home runs. He also posted a .619 on-base percentage and a 1.176 slugging percentage, leading the Griffons' offensive surge. As a team, the Griffons outscored opponents 63-12 during the week, earning a 16-6 win over Northwest Missouri State before completing a three-game sweep of Newman with victories of 15-1, 12-2, and 20-3.
Cantu opened the week with a 3-for-6 performance, scoring two runs and driving in six, highlighted by a grand slam in the 16-6 win at Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday. He followed with another standout showing on Friday against Newman, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and six RBI while adding a double and two home runs in the 15-1 victory. On Saturday, he continued to impact the game by reaching base three times via walks and scoring twice in the 12-2 win. He closed the week on Sunday by going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, adding a double to cap the 20-3 series-clinching victory over Newman.
