Griffons hit the road to Emporia State, host Washburn in key MIAA stretch

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (15-16, 10-10 MIAA) carries a five-game surge into a busy week of conference play, opening with a road matchup before returning to Griffon Baseball Field for a pivotal league series.

MWSU heads to Emporia State (23-8, 10-7 MIAA) on Tuesday, March 31 for a 3 p.m. start, then comes back home to take on Washburn (12-19, 9-10 MIAA) in a three-game set beginning Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Griffons have found their rhythm offensively, producing at a high level over the last five contests. During the stretch, MWSU is batting .394 while piling up 87 runs on 69 hits, along with 71 RBI. Extra-base production has been a major factor, with 15 doubles, a triple, and 11 home runs accounting for 119 total bases. Plate discipline has also played a role, as the lineup has drawn 40 walks to push the on-base percentage to .433.

The run began with a 24-run outburst at Northeastern State, followed by another strong showing at Northwest Missouri State. MWSU kept the momentum rolling with a three-game sweep of Newman, scoring 15, 12, and 20 runs to cap the stretch.

Leading the offensive push is MIAA Hitter of the Week Miguel Cantu, who has been a consistent spark in the lineup. Over the five-game run, Cantu is batting .571 (12-for-21) with five runs, three home runs, and 16 RBI, while posting a 1.238 slugging percentage and .643 on-base mark.

David De Hoyos has been equally impactful, hitting .500 (9-for-18) with 13 RBI and a .944 slugging percentage, providing steady run production. Seth Winkler and Luke Shannahan have added depth to the lineup, each hitting .429 during the stretch. Winkler has driven in 11 runs with a .905 slugging percentage, while Shannahan has contributed 10 RBI and a .857 slugging percentage.

The midweek trip to Emporia State serves as a strong test before the Griffons return home for a key series against Washburn, with conference positioning on the line.
