ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Tennis (1-1) began the spring portion of its 50th season Saturday with its home opener at Genesis Health Club, dropping a 4-2 decision to Rockhurst (1-1).

Rockhurst secured the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Claudia Pastor and Ella Gates earned a 6-0 victory for the Griffons, but Rockhurst claimed wins at No. 1 (6-3) and No. 2 (6-1) to take the early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Cristina Granero Boj battled at the No. 1 position but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Johanna Priedite put together a strong performance at No. 2 singles, earning a 7-6 (14-12), 6-1 victory to pick up a point for MWSU.

Jevrosima Mitic earned a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5.

At No. 4 singles, Alejandra Ramirez Botella battled in a close contest but fell in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7.

Ella Gates pushed her match to three sets at No. 5 singles, opening with a 6-2 win before Rockhurst responded to take the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2. The No. 6 singles match featuring Claudia Pastor went unfinished.

Griffon Tennis returns to the court Saturday, Feb. 28, for an 8 a.m. matchup against St. Mary's in Kearney, Nebraska.
