KEARNEY, Neb. – Griffon Tennis (2-1) secured a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon over No.13 St. Mary's (TX) (4-3) at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The Griffons claimed the early momentum by winning two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point.
At No. 1 doubles,
Jevrosima Mitic and
Alejandra Ramirez Botella delivered a dominant 6-1 win over Isabella Olsson and Selina Wu.
Claudia Pastor and
Johanna Priedite followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Alessia Terlizzi and Sarah Wooten to clinch the point. St. Mary's picked up its lone doubles win at No. 3, defeating
Cristina Granero Boj and
Mila Larrieu 6-2.
Holding a 1-0 lead entering singles, MWSU battled through six competitive matches.
Johanna Priedite extended the Griffons' advantage at No. 3 singles with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Gia Posito.
Alejandra Ramirez Botella added another key point at No. 5 singles, defeating Breeze Simon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Claudia Pastor also turned in a strong performance at No. 6, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Sarah Wooten.
St. Mary's answered with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as
Cristina Granero Boj and
Jevrosima Mitic fell in straight sets. The Rattlers also claimed a three-set decision at No. 4, where
Ella Gates pushed the match to a third set before falling 3-6, 6-4, 0-6.
With three singles wins combined with the doubles point, the Griffons secured the 4-3 team victory.
