Tennis competes in Edmond at ITA regional championships

EDMOND, Okla. - Griffon Tennis competed this past weekend at the ITA Division II Women's Central Region Championships held at the Broncho Courts on the University of Central Oklahoma campus in Edmond.

Ella Gates captured the Flight B Singles Championship with an outstanding performance. She opened with a strong (6-1, 6-2) win in the Round of 64.

In the Round of 32, she showed resilience after dropping the first set, rallying for a comeback victory (4-6, 6-1, 11-9).

In the Round of 16, Gates powered through with a straight-sets win (6-0, 6-4). She kept the momentum going in the quarterfinals, posting another solid result (6-3, 6-4). Her semifinal match was another display of consistency, earning a (6-3, 6-4) victory. 

Gates then sealed the championship in the final with a decisive (6-3, 6-2) win. 

Cristina Granero Boj entered singles Flight A as the No. 2 seed and advanced to the Round of 16. She opened with a dominant (6-0, 6-0) win in the Round of 64, then battled back in the Round of 32 after dropping the first set (5-7) to win (7-5, 10-5). Her run ended in the Round of 16 with a loss (2-6, 3-6).

Johanna Priedite put together an impressive run, advancing all the way to the semifinals in the open bracket of Flight A. She fell to the top seed in a three-set battle, taking the first set (6-4), dropping the second (3-6), and coming up just short (4-6) in the deciding set.

Jevrosima Mitic also made a strong showing in singles Flight A, reaching the Round of 16. She claimed her Round of 64 match (6-4, 6-0) and followed with a (6-2, 6-2) victory in the Round of 32. Mitic then fell to the No. 1 seed in the Round of 16 by a score of (3-6, 4-6).

Claudia Pastor earned a hard-fought win in the Round of 64, rallying after a (0-6) opening set to take the next two (6-4, 11-9). She was eliminated in the Round of 32 by the No. 3 seed (1-6, 1-6).

In Flight B singles, Mila Larrieu battled in the Round of 64 but came up short, falling (4-6, 4-6).

Doubles Results

In Flight B doubles, Ella Gates and Mila Larrieu advanced to the quarterfinals. They won their Round of 16 match, 8-3, before falling inthe quarterfinals by a score of 8-4.

In Flight A doubles, Johanna Priedite and Jevrosima Mitic reached the Round of 16. They earned an 8-4 victory in the Round of 32 before being edged out 8-2 in their next match.

Granero Boj and Claudia Pastor competed in Flight A doubles as well, where they dropped a hard-fought Round of 32 match by a narrow 8-6 score.

MoWest will return to action this fall on October 2, traveling to Kirksville, Missouri, to take on Truman State University. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Truman Tennis Courts.
