ROGERS, Ark. - Missouri Western men's golf turned in a 5th place finish as a team on Tuesday in the UAFS Invitational at Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers, Arkansas.
Playing just two of three scheduled rounds due to weather, Missouri Western shot a 612 (+36) as a team - one stroke behind UT-Permian Basin in fourth and just 12 shots behind tournament winner Harding.
The tournament was suspended in the second round on Monday evening. Play didn't resume until about 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
"We showed some rust with our 8-irons through our wedges," head coach
Matt Thrasher said. "It was windy and this was only our third day playing on natural surface so far. We drove the ball exceptionally well, but it's the touch shots where we didn't do well. But, we have some nicer days ahead here where we'll be able to get outside more."
"Overall, we beat the teams we needed to, but we've proven before that we can beat those teams at the top, and we can once we get things cleaned up."
Aiden Asby was the top Griffon in the lineup, as he tied for seventh place with a total score of 150 (+6). He birdied four times on the back nine in round one. In his second round, Asby birdied hole 9 and 12 with an eagle on hole 14 - a par 4.
Parker Bunting had a strong showing, finishing 13th with a two-round score of 152 (+8). He improved by four strokes in his second round, birdying four times in his final 18.
Jeffrey Johnston had a strong improvement in his second round to finish in a tie for 22nd at 154 (+10). Johnston shaved six strokes off in his second round, birdying three times on the back nine to end his final round.
Tim Johnston tied for 29th at 156 (+12), and his twin brother
Patrick Johnston was 89th at 172 (+28).
Missouri Western men's golf will be off from competition for a little while. The Griffons' next scheduled tournament is the Tiger Classic on Mar. 31 - Apr. 1 from Smoky Hill Golf Course in Hays, Kansas.
