Men's basketball holds off Quincy Saturday

Griffons now 3-0 at home, 3-1 in games decided by single digits.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Men's Basketball (4-2) overcame an 11-point deficit early and fended off a late charge from Quincy, topping the Hawks 82-80 on Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Quincy (2-2) got off to an 11-0 start in the first three minutes, and then led 29-19 with 7:02 to go in the first half.

MoWest then mounted an 18-2 run to lead 37-31 with 2:42 left in the first half before settling for a 39-38 advantage at the break.

The Griffons, who remain unbeaten at home at 3-0, never lost the lead in the second half and led 58-46 with 12:05 to go.

Quincy never went away, getting to within 80-78 with 1:13 to go, but Ty Henry hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to stretch the lead to 82-78. The Hawks got one last basket as time expired, but the Griffs ultimately prevailed.

Devin Butler led five Griffons in double figures with a season-best 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a 2-of-2 effort from three. The 15 points is the most Butler has scored against an NCAA Division II opponent since he came to MoWest last season.

Marko Pavlovic logged his first career collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Henry finished with 13 points. Trey McKowen and Gavin Hershberger each added 10.

Lorenzo McMillion led Quincy with a game-high 22 points off the bench on 8-of-10 shooting, including a 4-of-4 clip from three.

MoWest shot 30-of-70 from the field (42.9%), including 7-of-30 (23.3%) from three. They were also 15-of-19 (78.9%) from the foul line.

MoWest continues non-conference play on the road this Tuesday when they face William Jewell. Tip-off from the Mabee Center in Liberty, Missouri is set for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com /listen) with pregame coverage starting at 5:30 p.m.
