Griffons set for Topeka preliminary round trip

Missouri Western State University, the 2024 MIAA tournament champions, take the number three seed into the NCAA Division II Championships women's tennis preliminary rounds Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11.

It's the third successive NCAA appearance for the Griffons. Head coach Alejandro de la Torre's squad sports a 17-3 record and has won five straight duals. They are coming off a historic weekend in Edmond, Okla., where they topped Northeastern State University and the University of Nebraska at Kearney to earn the program's first regular season or postseason loop title.

The Griffons face Great American Conference champion Southeastern Oklahoma State in a semifinal set to begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Washburn College's tennis complex in Topeka, Kansas with the victor moving on to battle the host Ichabods at 2 p.m. Saturday in the championship match. The weekend champion earns a slot in the final 16 scheduled for May 20-24 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. A year ago, MWSU advanced to Florida with wins over the University of Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri State University.
