Standout singles play guides MWSU into regional final

TOPEKA, KAN. – Missouri Western State University overcame a doubles team point loss Friday, May 10, to move on in NCAA Division II preliminary round action.

Head coach Alejandro de la Torre's Griffons, improving to 18-3, used the ever-steady singles play of the quartet of senior Isabella MacGibbon (Brisbane, Australia), senior Anais Peralta Criado (Sevilla, Spain), sophomore Cristina Granero Boj (Malaga, Spain), and graduate student Maria Saez (Alicante, Spain) to rebound from the early 1-0 deficit against Great American Conference champion Southeastern Oklahoma State University. They each rolled to straight-set victories on Washburn University's tennis courts including Saez who moved to 20-0 and Granero Boj who surrendered only five game losses in a rock-solid set of triumphs that lasted around an hour and a half each.

The Griffons clash with MIAA rival Washburn University Saturday, May 11, at 3 p.m. It will mark the program's third straight regional final appearance with the victor advancing to Altamonte Springs, Fla., for the final 16 portion of the championships.
