MAYETTA, KS. – Missouri Western State University's last tune-up before the 2024 MIAA Championships saw more spring season success Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9.
The Griffons, keeping themselves close to a first five outing among a largely league field at Washburn University's Firekeeper Classic, posted rounds of 286, 290 and 293 for a 54-hole 869, putting them sixth in the 15-team roster. The opening 18-hole effort on Firekeeper Golf Course had them positioned fourth and right beside the University of Central Missouri, West Texas A&M and the host Ichabods before winding up only two strokes from the top five and less than 15 from the best four.
Head coach
Matt Thrasher's squad had plenty of individual highlights, too. None was likely more pleasing to his teammates than the feat of freshman
Sam Schoeberl of St. Joseph, Mo. Battling through a 227, Schoeberl still found plenty of celebration, as he nailed an ace on number five during final round play. Junior
Jeffrey Johnston (St. Joseph, Mo.) and sophomore
Marius Dosiere (La Rochelle, France) worked themselves into a slot in the individual top 25, as Johnston's 213 left him tied for seventh, and Dosiere's 218 placed him in a tie for 25
