UNK holds off Griffs in tense top of MIAA table battle

Box Score KEARNEY, NEB. – Thrilling three-set battles at number one and two singles, a first set tiebreaker at number three singles … just a couple of headlines equaling an MIAA nail-biter Saturday, April 13.

As the dust cleared from some top-notch collegiate tennis between a pair of NCAA Division II top 35 combatants at the University of Nebraska-Kearney's Harmon Park, head coach Alejandro de la Torre's Griffons found themselves on the short end of a 4-3 final. Despite a defeat that ended an unbeaten start to the 2024 loop campaign, there were positives for the Gold and Black.

Graduate student Maria Saez (Alicante, Spain) led that list. She was a victor in doubles and singles competition. She roared to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at number five singles and joined senior Anais Peralto Criado (Sevilla, Spain) for a 6-3 win at number three doubles.

MWSU (12-2 overall, 3-1 MIAA) returns to its home court Wednesday, April 16. Washburn University visits for a 3 p.m. dual at Noyes Courts.
