Softball Opens MIAA Play With DH Sweep of Fort Hays

Griffons defeat Tigers 4-2 and 13-5 in conference opener

ST. JOSEPH - The Missouri Western softball team returned home for the first time in more than three weeks and brought their road momentum back to the Spring Sports Complex.  

The Griffons (12-4 overall, 2-0 MIAA) swept Fort Hays State 4-2 and 13-5 in the MIAA opener for both teams Saturday, extending MWSU's winning-streak to nine straight games. Mackenzie DeVine went 5-6 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored in the doubleheader, while Bubba Hoelscher went 4-6 with a home run and 4 RBI on the day. Myah Dwyer hit a grand slam in the game two victory. 


GAME 1 - FHSU 2, MWSU 4
Bubba Hoelscher's 3-run first-inning home run gave the Griffons an early 3-0 advantage and Western held on from there with a 4-2 victory. Mackenzie Devine went had three hits from the leadoff spot. Pitcher Sydney Rader picked up the win in the circle allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in 4.1 innings of work. The senior improves her record to 7-1 on the season. Natalie Kissinger, Harley Pruetting and Wynter Hurst pitched around trouble in relief to keep the Tigers scoreless through the final two innings.

GAME 2 - FHSU 5, MWSU 13 F/6
On the flip slide of a 3-0 lead in game one, the Griffons had to dig out of an early 3-0 hole in game two. MWSU erased the deficit with a four-run third inning to take the lead. The Griffons then exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, including a grand slam from Myah Dwyer to put it out of reach. Taylor Bristol's home run in the bottom of the sixth ended the day early with a walk-off run-rule victory. 

 Dwyer went 2-4 with a grand slam and 4 RBI in game two. 
Devine went 2-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. 
Hoelscher went 3-3 with an RBI.
Harley Pruetting picked up the victory in the circle. 

The Griffons return to action Sunday, March 10, when they host Nebraska Kearney at the Spring Sports Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12pm.
