Saez decision clinches loop opener

Box Score ST. JOSEPH, MO. – Four of six singles victories helped Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II top-30 ranked Missouri Western State University evade a fast-charging Northeastern State University of Oklahoma squad Saturday, March 30.

Head coach Alejandro de la Torres' Griffons, reaching double-figure dual triumphs for the fourth straight year and sixth time in the last seven seasons, overcame a doubles point loss after NSU won at number one and number three. Reigning Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Player of the Week Anya Chavez (Regina, Canada), sophomore Lucia Casas Blas (Madrid, Spain), sophomore Cristina Granero Boj (Malaga, Spain) and graduate student Maria Saez (Alicante, Spain) earned straight-set victories. Saez's 7-6 second set finale, which went to a tiebreaker, sent the home side at Noyes Courts running to their teammate in celebration of 4-3 thriller.

MWSU improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play. The Griffs resume back-to-back Easter weekend home duals Sunday, March 31, welcoming the University of Central Oklahoma for a 12 p.m. first serve in league action.
