SETTING THE STAGE
The Griffons (9-7, 3-3 GLVC) are riding high off the back of a slew of achievements and program firsts last weekend. The Griffons qualified for their first-ever conference tournament, secured their first-ever winning record as a program and goalkeeper
Mackenzie Porter snagged her 400th-career save. The reward for these accomplishments is a rematch against UIndy in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The Griffons have never beaten the Greyhounds, and last year's defending national champions have not lost a game within conference play or at the GLVC Tournament in two years.
Part of the Griffons' success this season can be attributed to increased goal production and significantly tighter defense. Every year that the program has existed, the Griffons have scored more goals than the previous year and conceded fewer. This year has seen a significant jump in both of those numbers. The Griffons have scored 30 more goals this season than last season while playing a game less.
Perhaps the most impressive statistic the Griffons have produced this season is their draw-control percentage. The Griffons sit at eighth overall in the nation with a 60.4% draw-control rate. They have used those won possessions to outscore opponents and win games in a convincing manor this year, including the program's first win over a team receiving votes in the top-25 poll.
SCOUTING NO. 5 UINDY: APRIL 28, 3 PM CST
The Greyhounds (15-2, 6-0 GLVC) are tough opposition, owning a top-15 scoring offense in the nation. They are beating teams by an average of 9.18 goals per game, the seventh most in the nation. Defensively, they are only giving up 6.88 goals per game, the third best in Division II.
The only two losses the Greyhounds have this season have come at the hands of teams in the top 10 in the nation. The first one was a mid-March loss to Regis by two goals when the Rangers were ranked seventh in the nation, the second defeat was at the hands of then No. 1 West Chester on April 1. Only five teams have scored more than 10 goals against the Greyhounds, and the only GLVC team to play them to within five goals was Maryville. The Griffons fell 17-4 to UIndy last weekend in the final regular season game of the year.
