Griffons open conference play in style with win over Emporia

Box Score ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western Tennis opened conference play with a bang, taking down Emporia State in dominant fashion on Friday in a 7-0 win at Genesis Health Club that started with a dominant pair of doubles games and finished with big-time singles performances across the board. 

The Griffons ( 6-2, 1-0 MIAA) picked up where they left off last season in conference play, as the Griffons have only lost twice in MIAA regular season play since the start of last season. The win pushes their win streak over Emporia State (2-7, 0-1 MIAA) to three.  

DOUBLES
The Griffons started out scorching hot in the doubles, as Isabella MacGibbon and Anais Peralta Criado took down Caroline Henry and Andrea Santaiago Sanchez 6-0, and Lucia Casas Blas and Anya Chavez beat Anastasia Pesic and Paige Stranghoner by the same score.  Anya Chavez and Cristina Granero Boj were up 3-2 Alexia Desmet and Daren Santiago Sanchez when the match was called, as the Griffons had already won their doubles point. 

SINGLES
MacGibbon started in No. 1 singles again, beating Desmet 6-4, 6-2. Chavez beat Angelina Gnezdilova in the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-4, the first of three Griffons to record a shutout in one of her matches. Granero Boj beat Karen Santiago Sanchez in the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-3, and Casas Blas took down Stranghoner in the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-3. The No. 5 match saw Peralta beat Pesic 6-2, 6-0, and Ariella Curci beat Andrea Santiago Sanchez in the No. 6 match 6-2, 6-2.  

    NOTABLES
  • The Griffons maintain their record of not dropping a point in singles matches against Division II opposition.
  • This is the fourth 7-0 sweep MWSU has recorded this season.
  • The Griffons have only dropped two total points against Division II opposition this season.

The Griffons host Newman (7-3) at Genesis Health Club in St. Joe. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
