Griffs hang tight but lose to No. 23 Washburn, 6-3

EDMOND, Ok. — Griffon Softball served Washburn all it wanted for five innings in day two of the MIAA Championships, but the No. 1-seeded Ichabods came away with a 6-3 quarterfinal victory at Gerry Pinkston Stadium thanks to their conference player of the year.

Missouri Western (28-21) looked like it was looming towards its 10th-straight win and a spot in the semifinals with a 3-2 lead until No. 23-nationally ranked Washburn rattled off four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Up 4-3 on No. 4 seed MWSU with two runs already in, pitcher Jaycee Ginter (30-3) cranked a two-run home run to right field to cap the scoring.

Washburn (44-11) struck first with a Jaden LaBarge RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the first to go up, 1-0. Missouri Western immediately responded in the top of the second thanks All-MIAA second baseman Sydni Hawkins. The junior slashed a single up the middle to score Braylee Adams and knot the game at 1-1.

One inning later with Emma Hoffart on first, Chloe Armstrong smoked her seventh home run of the season — a two-run, go-ahead shot to right field, putting the Griffs on top, 3-1. Missouri Western led for two innings until Washburn jumped on Sydney Rader (18-8) in the sixth, handing the sophomore her first loss in her last seven starts.
