ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Tennis opens 2020 competition this weekend as the Griffons host the Stoney Creek Hotel Tennis Classic Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Genesis Health Club. Head Coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas brings high expectations a brand-new roster to what hopes to be an exciting first year with the program.
 
The Griffons finished last season 11-13 with a first-round exit in the MIAA Championships in Oklahoma City. With the Stoney Creek Hotel Tennis Classic, the main goals are to set goals for the season and see what the Griffons can do against other competition from around the region.
 
NOTABLES:
 

• Griffon Tennis brings four returners to the 2020 squad: Mireia Birosta, Federica Salmaso, Karolina Ström and Katherine Yeacker.
• Ström currently has the third-highest singles win total in Griffon Tennis history with 25, while Salmaso brings 14 singles victories.
• Missouri Western also has five new faces that will compete this season: Claudia Iglesias, Sofia Ordinteva, Isabella MacGibbon, Ariella Curci and Nicole Donnelly.
• Missouri Western will host Augustana on Friday. The Vikings are picked by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to be the season's favorite.
• Newman is also slated to take on the Griffons this Saturday. The Jets finished 13-13 on the year in 2019.
