ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After opening their 2015 season in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Griffon Softball returns to the Natural State this weekend for six games in three days as part of the University of Arkansas-Monticello 8-State Classic in Bentonville.
THE GRIFFONSMissouri Western went 3-2 to start the season last weekend. Head Coach
Jen Bagley Trotter leaned on her literary knowledge to summarize the team's opening five games, referring to the opening weekend as, "The best of times and the worst of times." The Griffons hammered out eight home runs on the weekend but at times struggled to score any way other than the long ball. Newcomer
Shyanne Saladino was named the MIAA/AstroTurf Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 in two, complete game shutouts over the weekend.
Janie Smith came home 1-2 with a 7.31 ERA.
Missouri Western enters this weekend with six starters batting .333 or higher.
Tiffany Gillaspy is one of 50 players on the Division II Player of the Year watch list. The senior infielder leads the team with a .733 slugging percentage. She hit .333 over the weekend with two home runs, four RBIs and six runs scored. In all, six players have homered for the Griffons. They have scored 23 runs with 21 RBIs.
