JOPLIN, Mo. - After falling in the first set the Missouri Western volleyball refocused taking the final three sets defeating Southwestern Oklahoma State 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18) in the opening match of the Missouri Southern Invite. The Griffons hit .270 in the match getting 56 kills as they improve to 8-10 on the season.
The first set was a back and forth battle with the Bulldogs using two 5-0 runs getting a 25-23 victory. From there it would be all Griffons as they dominated the next three sets.
In set two the Griffons hit .290 with 13 kills. They had numerous mini runs to take the set 25-18. Set three was the Griffons best overall set hitting .424 with 16 kills and just two errors. MWSU had an 8-0 run and a 7-0 run in the set tacking set two 25-13.
In the final set the Griffons had 14 more kills as they went on a 9-1 run taking a 15-7 lead midway through the first set. The Griffons closed the set out winning 25-18 and taking the match 3-1.
Three Griffons had double digit kills with
Erica Rottinghaus leading the charge with 18. She also led the way in digs with 15.
Kelsey Olion had 12 kills and 12 digs while
Amanda Boender had 11 kills and three blocks.
Holly Pollock and
Sarah Faubel had 14 and 13 digs respectively.
Kelly Scannell had another career best with 48 set assists.
The Bulldogs fall to 7-11 on the season as they hit just .142 in the set. They were led by Joey Collins with 17 kills and 16 digs while Carly Zak had 15 kills.
Missouri Western returns to action later this afternoon with a match against South Dakota School of Mines. First serve is set for 4:00 pm.
