No. 10 Griffons cap perfect weekend with sweep

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 10 Griffon Volleyball closed the Holiday Inn Express Griffon Volleyball Invitational with a straight-set victory over McKendree on Saturday evening at the MWSU Fieldhouse, finishing the weekend 9-0 in sets.

MoWest improved to 10-1 on the season with the 25-10, 25-15, 25-20 victory. The Griffons controlled the match offensively, finishing with 45 kills while hitting .317 as a team and holding McKendree to a .071 hitting percentage.

The Griffons came out firing in the opening set, recording 16 kills with just two errors on 25 attacks for a .560 hitting percentage. MoWest rolled to a 25-10 opening-set victory before taking the second, 25-15. McKendree challenged the Griffons in the third, but MoWest finished off the sweep with a 25-20 win.

Tanith Roush led the Griffon attack with a match-high 13 kills while hitting .524. Noelle Sutcliffe added eight kills, while Taylor Russell and Holly Heldt each finished with seven. Brooklyn Gormley recorded five kills on seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage.

At the net, Mackenzie Peters led MoWest with nine total blocks, including one solo block and eight block assists. Heldt, Roush and Sutcliffe each added three block assists.

Katelyn Diani-O'Day paced the offense with 19 assists and added three service aces, while Emma Duff finished with 15 assists. Anna Weberg anchored the back row with a match-high 19 digs, and Heldt added 12.

The Griffons wrapped up the two-day invitational with three straight sweeps and a perfect 9-0 mark in sets, moving to 10-1 overall on the season.

No. 10 Griffon Volleyball opens MIAA play next weekend with two matches at the MWSU Fieldhouse. MoWest hosts Central Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. before facing Newman on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.
