Baseball tops No, 29 Northwest, secures season series win

Griffs will rematch Northwest one more time in Maryville

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Baseball (19-17, 14-11 MIAA) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and ultimately beat No. 29 Northwest Missouri State, 7-3, on Wednesday evening at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex in St. Joseph.

MoWest takes the season series from the Bearcats, handing NWMSU (26-10, 16-6 MIAA) its first series loss of the season and snapping what was a seven-game winning streak.

MoWest took its first lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-run homer off the foul pole in left field by Luke Shannahan, putting the Griffs up 2-1.

Northwest tied the game in the third and it was tied again at 3-3 after each team added a run in the sixth.

MoWest pulled ahead with four runs in the eighth, taking the lead for good on a two-run RBI triple to right field by Micah Kobuszewski.

Northwest managed to load the bases in the ninth, but Cole Evans entered the game and recorded a strikeout to get his first save of the season.

Jackson Parrill (2-3) got the win, tossing 1.1 innings of late, hitless relief, striking out three and walking two.

David De Hoyos went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kobuszewski went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Shannahan finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

MoWest, winners of four straight and 11 of its last 14, stays home to host Rockhurst in a doubleheader on Friday. Those games are set to start at 1 and 4 p.m. The games will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network.
