ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 40 Griffon Tennis (14-2, 5-0 MIAA) continues conference play this week with a three-match stretch, featuring two road contests and one home matchup.
The Griffons begin the week Thursday, April 16 at 2 p.m. on the road against No. 18 Washburn (13-3, 4-1 MIAA) in Topeka, Kansas. The matchup features two of the top teams in the conference and provides another opportunity for MWSU to strengthen its resume against ranked competition. Washburn is highlighted by a nationally ranked No. 26 singles player, along with a No. 56 singles player and a No. 9 doubles team in the nation.
MWSU returns home Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m. to host Fort Hays State (8-7, 0-5 MIAA) at the Noyes Tennis Courts or Genesis Health Club, depending on weather conditions in St. Joseph. The Griffons will look to protect their home court in their final home match of the regular season.
The week concludes Saturday, April 18 with an 11 a.m. road match at Emporia State (8-8, 2-3 MIAA) in Emporia, Kansas. MWSU looks to finish the stretch strong as it continues through MIAA play.
The Griffons enter the week on a 12-match winning streak and remain undefeated in MIAA play. MWSU climbed to No. 40 in the latest ITA Division II rankings after a ranked win over No. 41 Central Oklahoma, who moved to No. 35 in the most recent poll. The victory helped the Griffons jump seven spots, rising from No. 47 to No. 40 following the 4-3 win over the Bronchos.
MWSU also features a nationally ranked doubles team, as
Jevrosima Mitic and
Alejandra Ramirez Botella are currently ranked No. 48 in the nation.
MoWest also appeared in the first Central Regional Rankings, released Wednesday, April 15 in alphabetical order, as one of five MIAA teams included in the poll.
