Softball swept by No. 10 Missouri Southern Friday

Griffs get set for No. 4 Pittsburg State next.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Softball (24-15, 5-11 MIAA) was swept by No. 10 Missouri Southern Friday, dropping the first game 3-1 and the second 7-2 at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex.

Game 1: MSSU 3 MWSU 1
The Griffons were held to just one hit, scoring its only run in the seventh. MSSU (35-5, 10-2 MIAA) scored one in the third and put up two more in the sixth.

Sophie Johnson drove in the only run for MoWest. Sydney Young had the only hit, which was a triple.

Ashlyn Finarty (5-3) started in the circle and took the loss, going 5.2 innings and striking out to. She walked two and was charged with three earned runs. Harley Pruetting tossed the last 1.1 innings, retiring four batters in a row and striking out one.

Game 2: MSSU 7 MWSU 2
The game was tied 1-1 after the third, but Southern took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Lions added three in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Kalee Higdon went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Brooklyn Clark was 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Myah Dwyer doubled and scored. The Griffs struck out 10 times and were issued no walks in the second game.

Torie Sandoval (7-5) started and was tagged with the loss, going 5.1 innings. She was charged with four earned runs, striking out three and walking two. Pruetting relieved the second game as well, going 1.2 innings. She struck out one and walked one.

Griffon Softball stays home to face No. 4 Pittsburg State (39-2, 11-1 MIAA) on Saturday. The games are set to start at 12 and 2 p.m. The doubleheader will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and available to watch on the MIAA Network.
