Baseball falls to Truman State in high-scoring midweek contest

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (8-12, 3-6 MIAA) fell to Truman State (6-11, 0-4 GLVC) 20-14 on Tuesday afternoon at Griffon Baseball Field at the Spring Sports Complex.

Truman State opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, using a run-scoring single to take a 1-0 lead.

MoWest answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Luke Shannahan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game, bringing home Luke Parmentier. Miguel Cantu followed with a single to right field that drove in two runs, scoring David De Hoyos and Micah Kobuszewski to give the Griffons a 3-1 advantage.

The Griffons continued to add on in the inning as Issac Huettl drew a bases-loaded walk to score Luke Shannahan and push the lead to 4-1. Dylan Coty then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Miguel Cantu to score and cap the five-run inning for a 5-1 lead.

Truman State responded in the second inning, hitting a three-run home run followed by a two-run single to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bulldogs added to their advantage in the third inning, scoring three more runs on an error, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run home run to extend the lead to 10-5.

Truman State continued to add insurance in the fifth inning with four runs on a pair of RBI singles and a two-run double to push the lead to 14-5.

MoWest answered in the fifth inning with three runs to cut into the deficit. Luke Shannahan doubled to center field to score Luke Parmentier, Miguel Cantu followed with an RBI single to bring home Shannahan, and Ricky Requejo added an RBI triple to score Cantu and make it 14-8.

Truman State added a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to extend the lead to 17-8.

The Griffons responded in the eighth as Luke Parmentier delivered a two-RBI single to score Ben Waliczek and Jordan Austin.

Truman State added three runs in the ninth to push the lead to 20-10, but MoWest answered with four runs in the bottom half. Luke Shannahan hit a two-run home run, Miguel Cantu added a solo homer, and Issac Sobieszczyk drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to bring the final score to 20-14.

MoWest finished the game with 13 hits, while Truman State collected 24 hits in the high-scoring contest.

What's Next
Griffon Baseball will continue its homestand starting a MIAA three-game series against Fort Hays State at the Spring Sports Complex. The series begins Friday, March 13 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in St. Joseph.
