ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (8-13, 3-7 MIAA) dropped the opening game of its conference series to Fort Hays State, 8-7 in 10 innings on Friday at Griffon Baseball Field at the Spring Sports Complex.
MoWest struck first in the second inning when
Seth Winkler doubled to left field, driving in
Issac Sobieszczyk and
Issac Huettl to give the Griffons a 2-0 lead.
Fort Hays State answered in the fourth inning with a two-run double and an RBI single to take a 3-2 advantage. The Griffons responded in the bottom half of the inning as Winkler delivered again with a two-RBI single to center field, bringing home Sobieszczyk and Huettl to put MoWest back in front 4-3.
The Tigers tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run, but the Griffons regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Luke Shannahan singled to left center to score
Miguel Cantu before
Issac Huettl added an RBI single that brought home Shannahan, extending the lead to 6-4.
MoWest added another run in the seventh inning when
David De Hoyos hit an inside-the-park home run to push the advantage to 7-4.
Fort Hays State rallied in the ninth inning with a three-run home run to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings. The Tigers then plated the go-ahead run in the 10th on a sacrifice fly to take the 8-7 lead.
The Griffons were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning as Fort Hays State held on for the extra-inning victory.

Griffon Baseball will continue its homestand on Saturday, March 14 with a MIAA doubleheader against Fort Hays State at Griffon Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 4 p.m. in St. Joseph.
