Griffon Baseball drops finale at MSU Denver to close opening weekend

DENVER, Colo. – Griffon Baseball (0-3) concluded the opening weekend on Sunday, falling 12–5 to Metro State-Denver (3-0) at The Assembly Athletic Complex.

The Griffons struck first in the opening inning when David De Hoyos doubled to left center, driving in Miguel Cantu and Luke Parmentier for a 2–0 lead.

MSU Denver responded in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one before tying the game in the second on a sacrifice fly.

MoWest regained the lead in the third inning. Hoyos lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jordan Austin, and later Luke Shannahan singled to left center to bring home M. Cantu, giving the Griffons a 4–2 advantage. MSU Denver answered in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to make it 4–3.

MSU Denver tied the game in the fourth on an RBI walk and then took its first lead of the day later in the inning with another bases-loaded walk to move ahead 5–4.

The Griffons evened the score in the sixth when Micah Kobuszewski reached on a fielding error, allowing Shannahan to score at 5-5.

MSU Denver responded immediately in the bottom half, scoring four runs to extend the lead to 9–5.

The Roadrunners added three insurance runs in the eighth inning to secure the 12–5 final.

What's Next
Griffon Baseball will host its home opener with a four-game series against Concordia–St. Paul, beginning Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at Griffon Baseball Field. The series includes a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., before concluding Sunday at noon.
