ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Baseball (1-4) split a Friday doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex. CSP took the first game, 6-5, before MoWest dominated game two, 7-0, behind a complete game shutout from
Cole Evans.
Game 1: Concordia-St. Paul 6 MoWest 5
CSP struck first with a solo shot home run in the top of the first, but MoWest answered in the bottom of the frame when David De Hoyos was hit by a pitch into bases loaded to tie it at 1-1.
The Golden Bears took the lead at 3-1 in the top of the second before the Griffons tacked on one in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI groundout by Miguel Canto. MoWest tied the game at 3-3 with a solo shot bomb from
Jack Mausser in the home half of the seventh.
CSP retook the lead for good in the top of the eighth with a three-run frame. Trailing 6-3, MoWest rallied in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run homer from
Luke Parmentier to make it 6-5, but a groundout in the next at-bat ended the game. Parmentier went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Mausser was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
Jordan Austin was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
Ben Ayala took the loss on the hill for MoWest, despite a solid outing. Ayala tossed five innings of middle relief, striking out four and walking one.
Jackson Parrill made his second start of the season, and went 2.1 innings in a no-decision, striking out four and walking five.
Game 2: MoWest 7 Concordia-St. Paul 0
The Griffons broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when
Easton O'Keefe scored an unearned run on an error at shortstop.
Carson Shear drove in another in the fourth with an RBI double to left to make it 2-0.
MoWest doubled that lead in the sixth with an RBI single from Shear and and a sac fly from
Jordan Austin.
The lead only grew from there, as MoWest added three insurance runs in the seventh to go up 7-0. Meanwhile,
Cole Evans was dealing on the mound, striking out 11 batters in the full nine innings, allowing just one hit and two walks in 102 pitches thrown, marking the first complete game for a Griffon pitcher since Zack Cushing vs. Maryville in April 2022.
MoWest resumes the series with Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and the MIAA Network.
