Box Score ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Women's Basketball (6-11, 2-6 MIAA) rolled to an 86-69 win over Nebraska Kearney (10-9, 3-5 MIAA) to close its four-game home stand, behind a masterclass showing from
Mia Morel, who finished with 39 points and seven three-pointers.
Morel 39-point performance stands as the second-most points in a single game in Griffon Women's Basketball history, tying the program record set by Yanique Javois and Jill Johnson, while her seven three-pointers also tied for the second-most in a game alongside Carly Lee and Brionna Budgetts.
The first quarter saw both teams trading baskets with neither side gaining early control. UNK edged ahead late in the period to take a one-point, 19–18 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The second quarter mirrored the opening frame, with UNK maintaining a narrow 28–27 advantage at the 4:21 mark. The Griffons closed the half on a high note, surging ahead with a 38–28 run capped by a Morel three-pointer at the 1:37 mark. MWSU went into halftime up 38-31.
Morel poured in nine points in the third quarter to push the Griffons ahead 60–54. Nebraska Kearney trimmed the margin to one at the 1:37 mark, but MWSU took control in the fourth, outscoring the Lopers 26–15 to secure an 86–69 win Saturday afternoon. Morel capped the effort with 15 points in the final period.
Morel led the way with a game-high 39 points, shooting 13-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-8 from three, adding seven rebounds and six assists.
Sydney Lewis added 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting, along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
LaNicia Parker finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Nakiya Harris chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
MoWest finished the game shooting 54.1 percent from the field (33-of-61). The Griffons connected on 37.9 percent from three-point range (11-of-29) and went 9-of-18 at the free-throw line for 50.0 percent.
UNK shot 40.3 percent from the field, finishing (25-of-62).
The Lopers connected on 39.4 percent from three-point range (13-of-33) and went 6-of-7 at the free-throw line for an 85.7 percent mark.
A midweek road test awaits MoWest as the Griffons head to Warrensburg on Wednesday to square off against Central Missouri. Opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the UCM Multipurpose Building.
