Schweitzer, Women's Golf in the lead after first round of Newman Invitational

Schweitzer in first by four shots, Griffons in the lead by seven.

NEWTON, Kan. – Saya Schweitzer is atop the leaderboard and Griffon Women's Golf is in the lead by seven strokes after the first round of the Newman Invitational at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton.

MoWest finished the first round with a team score of 298 (+10) – seven shots ahead of the second place Nebraska-Kearney B Team.

Schweitzer was outstanding in the first round, shooting a 67 (-5) with six birdies through the first round. She's four strokes ahead of Southwestern Oklahoma State's Maria Velilla.

Two other Griffs are in the top 10 after round one. Raleigh Puzio is tied for 7th with a 74 (+2). She birdied on holes 1 and 12.

Ines Vandaele is right behind, tied for 9th with a 75 (+3). She birdied on 4, 11 and 15.

Further down, Avery Wells and Makenna Casey are tied for 35th with an 82 (+10). Wells birdied on holes 5 and 8, while Casey birdied on 4.

MoWest wraps up the Newman Invitational on Tuesday morning with the second and final round teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
