Former Griffon tennis coach Ron Selkirk passes away at 78

Selkirk led the Griffons from 2006-2013.

Ron Selkirk, former head tennis coach at MoWest and a local St. Joseph tennis legend, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Mosaic Life Care.

Selkirk graduated from Truman State University in 1969 and moved to St. Joseph where he met and married Marilyn Tracy - his wife of 55 years. He was inducted into the Truman State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

Selkirk coached the Central High School tennis team for five years, and in 1974, he led the only St. Joseph high school team to earn a state championship title.

After teaching and coaching at Central for five years, the family moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Ron was the head pro and director of tennis at the Woodlake Racquet Club.

During this career phase, he coached two years at Augustana College, leading his players to high honors in the conference and saw two of his students qualify for the NCAA Division II championships.

Selkirk returned to St. Joseph in 1980 to become head pro and manager of the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club, dedicating six decades of his life to the sport he loved.

He was the head tennis coach at MoWest from 2006-2013.

When Ron wasn't playing tennis, or helping others develop their skills, he enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Farewell Services will be Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, Second Harvest Food Bank or Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Joseph. Online guest book and obituary is available at www.meierhoffer.com.
