ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western tennis (4-9, 1-5 MIAA) begins a three-match homestand this week, as the Griffons host No. 7 Washburn on Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Emporia State on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Both matches will take place at the Noyes Tennis Courts in St. Joseph. The Griffons will play at home for the first time this month after being on the road for each of their last four contests.
Griffon tennis was last in action this past Friday and Saturday, traveling to Wichita to face Newman and then Edmond to face Central Oklahoma most recently. The Griffons lost both matches, 5-2.
Against UCO on Saturday, Missouri Western's No. 1 doubles team of
Cristina Granero Boj and
Elena Rey Garcia defeated Anika Ouwejan and Nefeli Zafeiri, 6-3.
In singles, Granero Boj improved her record to 9-4 by winning the singles No. 1 match against UCO's Pete Komado, 6-4, 6-3.
Johanna Priedite also achieved victory in No. 2 singles, defeating Zafeiri 6-2, 6-3.
The Griffons first take on Washburn (13-1, 4-0 MIAA) – an Ichabods team that has won each of its last 11 matches.
Their doubles team of Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro are up to No. 2 in the nation. In singles, Ubachs up to No. 15 in the latest national rankings.
Washburn is 34-3 against Missouri Western all-time, as the Bods have won the last four meetings.
Emporia State (7-8, 2-3 MIAA) is coming off of a 5-2 loss at Washburn this past Thursday. ESU has picked up conference wins this season over Newman and on the road at Fort Hays State.
The Griffons have won five of the last six against the Hornets dating back to 2018.
