KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Charlie Burri, the "Godfather" of Missouri Western athletics, has died. He was 94.
A St. Joseph native, Burri was a fixture at Missouri Western since 1967, when he was first offered the role to be the first athletic director for the newly formed college. Burri also was appointed chair of the physical education department, and served as head basketball coach and golf coach.
It was Burri's vision that laid the foundation for Missouri Western athletics. The most visible reminder of that vision remains in the facilities built during his tenure. What was once a hillside with a flat patch of grass at the bottom became Spratt Memorial Stadium – now the home of the Griffon football, soccer and lacrosse. It's also become a centerpiece for the training camp site of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Next was the construction of the Looney Indoor Sports Complex, which is now the home of the Missouri Western basketball and volleyball.
Facilities are not the only part of Burri's lasting legacy, however. In 1970, Burri formed the Gold Coat Club, which still provides vital support for Missouri Western student-athletes.
Along the way, the softball team won a national title in 1982, the golf team made several national tournament appearances and the football team earned three bowl victories.
Burri retired in 1984, but remained a strong supporter of Missouri Western athletics. Upon his retirement, he became the first-ever inductee into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame, and served as chair for the Hall of Fame committee until 2012.
Burri has since been inducted into the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame (2021), the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2023).
Burri graduated from Christian Brothers High School, the St. Joseph Junior College and Northwest Missouri State University.
