ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -
Pau Valderrama's school record in the 5K highlighted Missouri Western's southern trip to the Texas Relays and the OBU Invitational.
TEXAS RELAYS
MWSU competed at the Texas Relays from Thursday to Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, facing off against top-tier NCAA Division I and II athletes.
Head coach
Cody Ingold remarked, "We competed well in unideal conditions on the first two days. We had an opportunity today with better weather, but struggled." He added, "We will spend the remainder of the season preparing for MIAA's and nationals."
Senior
Allyssa Mahone (Strawn, Texas) kicked off the action from her home state in the hammer throw, finishing 19th with a distance of 51.94 meters. She secured an NCAA Provisional mark of 14.48 meters in the Section B shot put, finishing fourth, and placed 14th in the discus.
Sophomore
Makenzie Garr also represented the Griffs in the Lone Star State, earning an 11th-place finish in the Section A shot put with an NCAA Division II Provisional distance of 14.87 meters.
On the men's side, Texas native and senior
Alex Thompson competed in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 33rd, while junior
Lucas Trotter achieved a 13th-place finish in the Section A shot put with a distance of 15.39 meters.
OBU INVITATIONAL
The Griffons also competed in the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational at the Hurt Memorial Athletic Complex in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
"The kids took advantage of the opportunity in Shawnee," Ingold stated. "Carlie's first throw of the weekend was a personal record, and everyone else followed suit. Pau shattered the 5k school record while leading for most of the race!" He added, "No one took a step back during the transition from indoor to outdoor. I'm excited to see how the rest of the outdoor season goes!"
On the men's side, Valderrama finished second in the 5000-meter with a school record time of 14:31.57. Junior
Deiondre Williams excelled with a first-place finish in the 800-meter, while
Tyrease Dutton-Bicalho took second in the triple jump.
For the women,
Madison Nash stood atop the podium with a time of 17.57.38 in the 5000m. Senior
Lillian Cutler also had a strong showing with a second-place finish in the 1500-meter. Additionally, senior
