ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western lacrosse sent Saturday's match with UC-Colorado Springs to overtime with a goal by
Maleah Sosa, but UCCS scored in the first 1:31 of the extra period to come away with a 16-15 win at Spratt Stadium.
Missouri Western (2-2) got off to a strong start, leading 5-2 early in the second quarter. UCCS pulled closer, but MWSU still led 7-5 at halftime.
The second half was back-and-forth the whole way, as UCCS tied the match at 8-8 with a goal by Sofia Watts with 8:11 left in the third.
Trailing 11-10 entering the fourth, the Griffons retook the lead with consecutive goals from
Caetryn Gilreath,
Jordan Porter and
Brooke Tjernlund to go up 13-11 with 12:04 left in regulation.
UCCS eventually scored three straight goals to lead 15-14 with 58 seconds left in regulation before Sosa's equalizer.
Emma Grace Martin scored the winning goal for the Mountain Lions on a free position with UCCS a player up.
Gilreath scored a new career-high five goals. Porter, Sosa and
Clare Sondrall each scored two goals. Porter had a career-best four assists, while Sondrall led the way with five draw controls.
Ava Garaway (2-2) had 13 saves in cage, tying her season-high.
Missouri Western will face Northern Michigan this Friday, March 7 at 2 p.m. The match will be played in Quincy, Illinois.
