ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Men's Basketball (2-1) overcame an early seven-point deficit and survived Augustana, 69-68, on Friday afternoon at the MWSU Fieldhouse in the annual Hillyard Tipoff Classic.
In a game that featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties, MoWest eked out a 67-63 lead with 2:08 to play. Augustana's Tanner Te Slaa hit a massive three-pointer with 1:06 remaining to pull the Vikings to within 67-66.
After a couple more back-and-forth, scoreless possessions, MoWest's
Ty Henry got himself on the free throw line with 7.5 seconds remaining, and he drained both to give the Griffons a 69-66 lead.
Augustana brought the ball up the length of the floor in the closing seconds. Tameron Ferguson passed the ball to Caden Hinker, who drained a deep shot from the right side as the buzzer sounded, but the shot was ruled as a two-point field goal, and the call was upheld following a video review.
Marko Pavlovic led MoWest with a career-best 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
William Kiburis logged a new collegiate career-high with 20 points. He also recorded his first career double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds.
MoWest shot 29-of-64 (45.3%) from the field, including 5-of-23 from three (21.7%). The Griffs struggled at the foul line, hitting 6-of-14 (42.9%). MoWest was, however, very efficicent with 15 assists to just five turnovers.
Ferguson and Sam Rensch led Augustana with 16 points each. The Vikings also struggled at the free throw line, hitting 6-of-11 (54.5%).
MoWest is right back at it on Saturday, facing Wayne State. Tip-off from MWSU Fieldhouse is set for 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network.
